Former Spymaster Faiz Hameed Challenges 14-Year Sentence in Military Court

Former Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence, Faiz Hameed, has formally challenged the verdict handed down by a military court by filing an appeal against his sentence. His counsel, Mian Ali Ashfaq, confirmed that the petition was submitted on December 27, though he declined to share further particulars of the appeal.

Previously, a Federal Court Martial had sentenced the retired lieutenant general to 14 years in prison after finding him guilty of offences including misuse of authority, breaches of the Official Secrets Act, and violations of the Pakistan Army Act.

The details of the ruling were outlined earlier this month by Director General ISPR Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry during a media briefing on December 11. He stated that proceedings under the Pakistan Army Act were initiated against Faiz Hameed on August 12, 2024, followed by an investigation that continued for approximately 15 months before the court reached its decision.

Under Section 133-B of the Pakistan Army Act, the former spymaster was entitled to file an appeal within 40 days from the date the verdict was announced.

According to legal procedure, such appeals are examined by a Court of Appeals constituted under the authority of the Chief of Army Staff. Upon review, the Army Chief may uphold or reject the appeal, order a suspension of the sentence, or alter the punishment in line with the law.
