Australia has successfully demonstrated a newly assembled medium-range ground-based air defense system, combining sensors, software and weapons already present within its military inventory. Conducted with American assistance, the trial represents a first-of-its-kind integration effort designed to offer an affordable alternative to purchasing costly dedicated systems such as Patriot batteries.
The test, carried out during Exercise Taipan Strike 2026 at the Woomera test range in South Australia, saw an SM-2 interceptor missile launched from a trailer-mounted Expeditionary Launch System, successfully engaging a BQM-74E target drone. Australia’s Department of Defence described the effort as the product of sustained collaboration and engineering work between military and industry partners, including Lockheed Martin and the United States Navy.
The SM-2 missile used in the test was guided by a virtualized version of Lockheed Martin’s Aegis combat system, paired with a phased-array radar supplied by Australian firm CEA Technologies. Aegis, typically deployed aboard warships, was configured in a compact, mobile form for the trial, based on the baseline system used aboard the Royal Australian Navy’s Hunter-class frigates and Hobart-class destroyers.
Lockheed Martin described the approach as enabling cross-service integration, allowing land forces to draw on weapons and command systems normally reserved for naval platforms. Company executives noted that the prototype can fire any missile currently fielded aboard Hobart-class destroyers or future Hunter-class frigates, including the SM-2 Block IIIB, Block IIIC and SM-6 variants already held by the navy. Introducing the SM-6 into a land-based role could eventually give Australia a ballistic missile defense option, though this would require a strike-length vertical launch system integrated into the mobile launcher.
Australian defense officials have signaled for some time that flexibility in missile inventory management, using naval munitions on land and vice versa, is a priority given limited overall stockpiles. This approach aligns with recommendations from Australia’s 2023 Defence Strategic Review, which cautioned against pursuing costly, drawn-out solutions in favor of fielding capable systems more quickly, as well as the 2026 National Defence Strategy’s call for accelerated ground-based missile defense integration.
Notably, Australia’s disclosure of the test, conducted a month earlier but announced only days after a Chinese submarine fired a nuclear-capable ballistic missile into the South Pacific, drew attention to concerns raised by opposition lawmakers regarding the vulnerability of Australian military installations to missile threats.
While officials caution that the hybrid system remains a work in progress, the successful trial reduces technical risk and demonstrates a viable pathway for Australia to strengthen its ground-based air defenses using existing sovereign capabilities. Lockheed Martin has suggested the approach could hold relevance beyond Australia, offering a template adaptable to the defense needs of other nations and regions.
