Israel has carried out the first flight test of an AI-powered tactical drone built to spot and track wildfires within minutes of ignition, a capability designed to give emergency responders more time to react.
The project brings together Israel’s Ministry of National Security, the Israel Innovation Authority, Israel Aerospace Industries, the Technion Israel Institute of Technology, and the Israel Fire and Rescue Authority. Further trials are planned to test the drone across a range of operating conditions and terrain before it is cleared for service.
Wildfires have become a growing concern in Israel and across the eastern Mediterranean as hotter, drier summers extend fire seasons and make blazes harder to contain once they take hold. Traditional fire detection relies heavily on watchtowers, satellite imagery with limited refresh rates, and reports from the public, all of which can miss a fire in its earliest and most manageable stage. Pairing computer vision and AI-based analysis with a tactical drone, technology originally developed for military surveillance, gives responders a much faster detection loop, and the involvement of a defence contractor like Israel Aerospace Industries points to how quickly dual-use drone and sensor technology developed for the battlefield is migrating into civilian disaster response.
