The United States and the United Arab Emirates are setting up a joint military task force aimed at speeding the adoption of artificial intelligence across defence missions in the Middle East.
The new unit, called Task Force Talon Synapse, is the first bilateral military AI task force between Washington and Abu Dhabi, and it is expected to become operational within the coming weeks, according to US Central Command.
CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper described the initiative as “a historic milestone,” saying it reflects the strength of the partnership between the two countries in bringing new AI capabilities to their forces more quickly.
The task force adds to a broader pattern of the US expanding AI and technology cooperation with Gulf partners, an area where Washington has balanced deepening security ties against concerns about advanced technology, including AI chips and software, ending up accessible to rival powers through third countries. The UAE has positioned itself as a regional hub for AI development in recent years, investing heavily in data centres and AI firms, which makes it an attractive partner for the US military as it looks to field AI-enabled tools for tasks such as intelligence analysis, logistics and target identification across CENTCOM’s area of responsibility, which spans some of the world’s most volatile air, land and maritime environments.
